SEA is the only educational organisation affiliated to the Labour Party. Anyone who does not belong to another political party may join as an individual member. Affiliation to the SEA is open to national organisations, Labour Party CLPs and trade unions. SEA members include MPs, school governors, local Councillors, teachers, students, parents - in fact anyone with an interest in education. Our President is the eminent educationalist Professor Richard Pring.

Academy Chain and Academy Head Criticised for Reckless Expenditure

E Act the Academy Chain that boasts that it 'aspire(s) to transform the educational landscape of the UK' has been criticised for widespread financial irregularities in an official report. The landscape has indeed been transformed from one of public sector service to one where 'expenses claims and use of corporate credit cards indicate a culture involving prestige venues, large drinks bills, business lunches and first class travel, all funded from public monies'.

Delapidated Schools still Waiting for Funds to Rebuild

The 261 most dilapidated schools have been waiting for funds to rebuild since Michael Gove abolished the Labour government's own scheme. Now, shockingly, 137 of those most in need of rebuilding have been told they have to wait, again.The Department for Education said some 137 schools earmarked for the programme a year ago, would now be "delivered using capital funding, subject to the next spending review settlement." Education Spending Lacks Accountability

A new report from the Public Accounts Committee has highlighted the profligate spending by the Department for Education on its pet projects, namely the unfettered expansion of Academies and Free Schools. Martin Johnson, deputy general secretary of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, said: "It's hard to know which is worse, the lack of financial transparency in academies or the government's failure to check for and identify instances of misuse of funds.

Curriculum Chaos on the Horizon

Concern grows about the rush to implement changes to the curriculum by 2014. ASCL, which represents many secondary heads, has called for an extension to a consultation which ends next week. There is widespread recognition that Michael Gove is so desperate to implement the changes before he leaves office, he will place political expediency above the necessity to test the proposals robustly before introducing them.
